Runeterra Update: Demacia!
The latest chapter to the Runeterra update features the ever proud and noble land of Demacia.

Demacia is a strong, lawful society with a prestigious military history. It values the ideals of justice, honor and duty highly, and its people are fiercely proud. Demacia is a self-sufficient, agrarian society, with abundant, fertile farmland, dense forests that are logged for lumber, and mountains rich with mineral resources. It is inherently defensive and insular, partly in response to frequent attacks from barbarians, raiders and expansionist civilizations. Some suggest that the golden age of Demacia has passed and unless it is able to adapt to a changing world – something many believe it is simply incapable of doing – that its decline is inevitable. Nevertheless, Demacia remains one of the dominant powers in Valoran, and boasts the most elite, well-trained army in all of Runeterra.

It is also home to some of the fiercest and greatest champions of Valoran, namely the Demacian noble houses; Garen and Luxanna of House Crownsguard, Fiora of House Laurent and Jarvan IV of House Lightshield, to name a few. With Galio making his heroic entrance into the Rift in the latest patch, many champions of Demacia has had their bio and lore updated. The kingdom itself has been updated to be more specific and divided into several new places that enhances the rich environment of the Runeterra world.

The people of Demacia are driven by their common cause to disseminate benevolence and order for the betterment of all beings throughout Valoran. They view malice and selfishness as a disease which should be expunged from the psyche of humankind. Those who come to Demacia and choose to settle within its borders are expected to share the ideals and virtues of its citizenry. Those who seek personal gain at the expense of others quickly find themselves ostracized… or worse.

The largest city in the Kingdom, the capital is the main political, cultural, religious, military, economic and educational center of the country. Demacia is a shining beacon of hope for humanity, and as such the nation and its Capital are the visual representations of this concept. There is a clean and pristine feel and look to its cities. Towering spires litter the skyline of the city. White stone and marble are the materials of choice in the construction of Demacian buildings. Majestic flags fly high along the parapets of the city. The city walls virtually gleam with power and nobility.

Demacia is home to a variety of League champions. They are of nobles, hunters and vigilantes each with their own agenda, be it personal or political. The running theme of their champions seems to be of noble soldiers, royalty and hunters. The latest update on Galio brought new perspectives to the older champions, and his theme revolves being a hero of old to Demacia. The champions featured here are the ones that had short stories updated alongside Galio’s latest rework.

Prince Jarvan IV comes from a lineage of kings, and is favored to lead Demacia in the next era. Raised to be the paragon of Demacia’s greatest virtues, Jarvan IV often struggles with the heavy expectations placed upon him. On the battlefield, he inspires his troops with his fearsome courage and selfless determination, revealing his true strength as a leader of men.

A dominant champion in the Jungle lane, he is sometimes picked as a sort of ‘AP’ killer in Mid lane owing to his aggressive play-style and skill set. The current bio update on Jarvan IV sees his relationship with Shyvana, whom he forged an unbreakable bond of comradeship for saving his life, and assisted her in vanquishing the Accursed Dragon, Yvva.

Shyvana is a half-dragon with the magic of a fiery rune shard burning within her heart. Though she often appears humanoid, she can transform into a fearsome dragon at will. Unsure if she is fundamentally human or beast, Shyvana fights to master her powers as she shifts between two forms.

Shyvana is another dominant Jungle laner, having the capacity to sustain and manage the Jungle routes fairly quickly. Though she is not seen to be a top pick in recent times, this writer hopes to see the day she gets an update to be relevant again in the future meta. The latest update to her bio sees her strong bond with the crowned prince of Demacia, Jarvan IV, as she saved his life in one of his skirmishes.

Shauna Vayne is a deadly, remorseless monster hunter who has pledged her life to finding and killing the demon who murdered her family. Armed with her wrist-mounted crossbows and a heart full of vengeance, Vayne is only truly happy when she’s slaying practitioners or creations of the dark arts.

Vayne remains a deadly pick as an AD Carry in the Bot lane. She is relevant as a counter-pick to the current meta picks of heavy Tanks in the Top (and sometimes Support) roles. As she can snowball off fairly quickly if she dominates her lane, Summoners are required to proceed cautiously unless they wish to hear the dreaded ‘PENTA KILL‘ announcement for the enemy team.

Quinn is an elite ranger-knight of Demacia who undertakes dangerous missions deep in enemy territory with her legendary eagle, Valor. The two share an unbreakable bond that is uniquely deadly, and their foes are often slain before they realize they are fighting not one, but two Demacian heroes.

Surprisingly, Quinn has been a popular pick for Top lane as of late. Even with the hit on Lethality items such as Youmuu’s Ghostblade, she is able to actively counter-pick heavy tanks who are usually dominating said lane. However, she is fairly reliant on her team and how well they are doing would make (or break) the relevancy of having her on the team.

Garen is a warrior of Demacia who has devoted his life to defending his kingdom and its ideals. Armed with his magic-resistant armor and broadsword, Garen puts his life on the line for both his nation, and his fellow soldiers.

AD Garen, that is something everyone woes to hear lately. Not only is his basic stats for Armour is as high as the sky, he can now opt for a different build, one that makes his Decisive Strike and ultimate, Demacian Justice, a pain in the ***. However there is little to no picks for Garen as of now for the higher-tiered elo ranked games though he is a popular pick in the bronze-gold level games as usual (being one of the earlier buys for beginners).

Luxanna Crownguard is a powerful young light mage from Demacia, an insular realm where magical abilities are viewed with fear and suspicion. Forced to keep her power secret for much of her young life, she grew up fearing discovery and exile, but learned to embrace her magic and covertly wields it in service of her homeland.

Lux remains a favourite pick in Mid lane in low to high tiered elo ranked games. Regardless if her role is in Mid or as a Support, Lux is a heavy damage dealer once she hits that level 6 limit, with her insane cooldown limit on all her skills. Both Lux and Garen shares an updated sibling short story with the latest update dubbed “Last Light” and “The Soldier and the Hag“.

With all the latest update on Demacia and its champions, Summoners should check out all the short stories on these champions as they are both intuitive and entertaining. They increase the characteristics and backstory of the champions as well as their agenda and roles in the ever-changing and evolving world of Runeterra.
