Hello and welcome to Back to Basics, a series of articles meant to help you climb that Ranked ladder and in general improve your gameplay. Please take note that this series will be targeted at players who are at mid to low ELO (I consider Gold and lower to be mid to low elo). In this article, we’ll be looking at Splitpushing

When should I split push?

There are a multitude of reasons why you would rather split push instead of grouping for team fights.

  • Your team is behind in gold and a team fight will only cause more losses.
  • Your team is not a very good comp against the enemies and they are just better at teamfights.
  • Hence, you want to divert their attention to split their team up.

DO NOT split push if the enemy team is good at engaging (Rammus, Leona, Sivir, etc). This will just leave your team mates in a situation where they have to fight 4v5s.

Also do not split push if you are already winning team fights and can just group to win. Split pushing is a riskier tactic as there are many possible ways for something to go wrong.

-Am I a Good Splitpusher?-

There a few traits that make champions good split pushers. Do note that you don’t need all of them to be a good split pusher but the more you have, the better.

  • You can 1v1 anyone on the enemy team.
    • This is really good if you can do it. If they send one person to deal with you, you kill them and force the enemy team to choose to either 4v4 while you take objectives for free or 4v3 while they send another person to deal with you.
    • If they send multiple people, disengage and wait for an opportunity to continue split pushing once they stop pursuing you.
  • You have good waveclear/can break turrets quickly
    • Without either of these traits, you can’t really create lane pressure if you can’t push.
      • You can always buy good split push items such as Bami’s Cinder/Sunfire Cape, Tiamat, Statikk Shiv and Luden’s Echo.
    • If you can push fast, even without alot of damage, you can get minion waves to crash into turrets quickly.
  • You have a good escape skill/high mobility
    • If the enemy sends multiple members to chase you, that would be the ideal situation as you can escape and then continue pushing once they give up chasing you.
  • You have map wide pressure
    • If you can support a teamfight with a global skill or ulti, you can help your team mates as you split push.
    • If you have a map-wide mobility skill (i.e. Twisted Fate, Pantheon, Shen, Galio) to get to teamfights.
      • You can also do this with the Teleport Summoner

BTB SPLITPUSHING nonsplitpusher

  • DO group up to pressure an objective
    • This could be pushing a lane, gathering for Baron or Dragon.
  • DON’T push a lane adjacent to your split pusher
    • The enemy could 5 man your split pusher and kill him, then engage your team in a 4v5
  • DON’T split up any further
    • If your team is split up or spread too thinly, the enemy can get easy picks on your team.
  • DON’T try and help your splitpusher
    • The objective of split pushing is to relieve pressure on other parts of the map
    • If your split pusher is getting 2v1’d and getting chased by them, that is what you WANT to happen.
    • Now you’re free to fight a 4v3!

  • DO communicate with your team that you intend to split push.
  • DO wait for your team to pressure an objective before you start pushing as well.
  • DON’T push alone while your team isn’t able to pressure anything.
    • Pushing alone is NOT split pushing, it is just putting yourself in a bad position.
    • This is the highest priority when split pushing.
    • If you get killed, you leave your team in a 4v5 without having achieved anything.
  • DO continue pushing once your enemies have stopped pursuing you
  • DON’T engage if the enemy sent multiple people to stop you
    • Instead, try to keep them chasing you so that your team can fight a 4v3

And there you have it! A quick guide to all you need to know for split pushing.

Thanks for reading and good luck on the Rift.
