Why Ezreal is always relevant in Professional League of Legends
Despite META shifts, Ezreal still remains a very popular pick in Professional League of Legends

Hello summoners! It’s your friendly neighborhood boosted shoutcaster for the Malaysian region of League of Legends with another article! This time it’s covering Ezreal’s popularity within the professional level of League of Legends.

With the ever shifting META within the landscapes of Summoner’s Rift, there has been an endless amount of pick rotations in regards to the bot lane marksmen/ADC. Popularity within the regions has shown that champions like Caitlyn, Ashe, Jhin & Lucian making more appearances as the desired marksmen. However, Ezreal has managed to rise up again in popularity mainly because of how he fits in the META and with changes towards marksmen itemization, Ezreal still benefits by leaps and bounds because of it!

Let’s take a closer look as to why that is the case by firstly looking at his………………

Rising Spell ForceRising Spell Force (Passive)
Ezreal gains 10 / 12 / 14% bonus attack speed for 6 seconds every time he hits his abilities, stacking up to 5 times.

Mystic ShotMystic Shot (Q) – linear collision skill shot
Ezreal fires a bolt of energy in a line, dealing physical damage to the first enemy hit, and applying on-hit effects. If Mystic Shot successfully hits an enemy, all of Ezreal’s ability cooldowns are refreshed by 1.5 seconds.

Essence FluxEssence Flux (W)linear, pass-through skillshot with a self- and ally-targeted buff component
Ezreal fires a wave of energy in a line, dealing magic damage to enemy champions struck, and granting all allied champions struck bonus attack speed for 5 seconds. Ezreal may also use this ability to boost himself with Essence Flux and gain benefits from it’s effects.

Arcane ShiftArcane Shift (E) ground-targeted blink with an auto-targeted component
Ezreal blinks to the target location, firing a homing bolt that deals magic damage to the nearest enemy.

TTrueshot Barragerueshot Barrage
– linear, pass-through skillshot with an area of effect component
After gathering energy for 1 second, Ezreal fires an energy projectile in the target direction, dealing magic damage to enemies it passes through. Each enemy hit reduces the projectile’s damage by 10%, down to a minimum 30% damage.

Looking at Ezreal’s ability kit, we see that a theme that is prevalent is his ability to do damage from long range (Q, W & R), an auto attack speed steroid (Passive) and a fairly low cooldown gap-closer/escape mechanic (E). Ezreal possesses the tools that plays to the strengths of poke-heavy/siege centered compositions or peel comps with good engage/disengage.

Let’s talk about scaling

“Scaling” – defined as a changing value in comparison to a norm. In the context of League of Legends, it means how well a champion or team composition is compared to another champion/team composition at a given moment in time.

As an example, Nasus is a terribly weak laner but in later stages of the game “you gotta respect that 1k on hit damage from his Siphoning Strike (Q)” and with that logic, we can confirm that Nasus is a late game scaling” champion.

In relations to The Prodigal Explorer, because of his kit and how he scales” through itemization (BOTRK > Tear of Goddess > Muramana > Iceborn Gauntlet/Trinity Force) and inherent stat growth, Ezreal is a consistent and safe Marksmen that fits almost every composition in the current META. His damage output given the right circumstances is off the charts (because of how Muramana and Iceborn Gauntlet/Trinity Force synergize with one another) and his ability to escape unpunished has made him a staple for professional level League of Legends.

Despite changes across the board in terms of Lethality (a topic I will cover in a later article) and overall item variety, Ezreal still fits in the META simply because of his scaling and how strong his kit is given to the right person and played in the best team composition that play to his strengths. Unless a core ability of his is changed to a point where he loses his champion identity or a straight up damage nerf hits him in terms of abilities or stats then I don’t see Ezreal falling off in relevance at any level of League of Legends.
